VILLA “IL CEDRO” PONZANO MONFERRATO
Ubicato nella corte interna della villa, assolutamente impercettibile dall’esterno, il giardino suscita nel visitatore inaspettata sorpresa.
L’impianto del giardino risale al 1877, anno in cui la contessa Adele Roggeri Sannazzaro affidò all’ingegner Brocchi il progetto di ampliamento della “Casa di campagna” sita in Ponzano.
Dall’analisi degli elaborati progettuali si evince che oltre alla residenza il progetto del Brocchi interessò anche il giardino, impostato su una terrazza sostenuta da un muro di contenimento dalla quale si può godere di una scenografia spettacolare in cui le controllate linee curve del giardino si amalgamano alle curve delle colline che lo circondano, dando vita a un paesaggio di notevole bellezza.
L’impianto, oggi ancora perfettamente conservato, prevedeva la realizzazione di aiuole dalle forme curve definite da basse siepi di bosso a contenimento di superfici tenute a prato.
Le aiuole perimetrali erano occupate da folte masse arbustive con fioriture colorate che definivano i limiti del sito, mentre quelle centrali ospitavano esemplari arborei disposti a gruppi alternati a piante isolate al fine di esaltare le caratteristiche architettoniche dei vari individui.
La tessitura cromatica ottenuta dalle due tonalità di verde del prato e del bosso era contrastata dal grigio ghiaino della pavimentazione dei percorsi, enfatizzando le forme sinuose delle aiuole.
La facciata a loggiati sovrapposti della villa fu valorizzata mediante l’inserimento sull’ asse centrale del prospetto, di una aiuola ovale utilizzata come una sorta di grande vaso all’interno del quale erano coltivate piante da fiore che impreziosivano la vista dalla residenza.
Il progetto non specifica il tipo di specie arboree e arbustive previste, tuttavia si può supporre che certamente faccia parte dell’impianto originario il maestoso cedro del Libano che dà il nome alla residenza, dominando con i suoi poderosi rami gran parte del giardino, oltre alle curatissime
siepi di bosso che delimitano le aiuole prative.
Grazie a un attento restauro attuato dagli attuali proprietari è stato recentemente ripristinato l’antico orto, dove cordoli di vecchi mattoni delimitano le aiuole coltivate con verdure di grande effetto decorativo.

Il primo sguardo è catturato dal gioco sinuoso di siepi di bosso che disegnano sul tappeto erboso ampi ricami attorno ad una vasca chiacchierina; ombreggia il prato il cedro del Libano, l’albero più maestoso e antico.
Un piccolo belvedere è un angolo romantico e gentile, sospeso sulla scarpata sottostante ricolma di arbusti e fiori ai piedi di bagolari, una sequoia, tassi.
Il giardino, che si raggiunge dalla villa scendendo una breve scalinata, si adagia su di un ripiano più elevato di qualche gradino rispetto all’area circostante, il dislivello mimetizzato da macchie fiorite.
Intorno si estendono aree ricche di arbusti e fiori, soprattutto erbacee perenni ben etichettate che dimostrano conoscenza botanica e buon gusto negli accostamenti di
forme e colori; non mancano fioriture spontanee – di orchidee a primavera e di piccole bulbose che si disseminano da sole illuminando nel primo autunno i pendii erbosi del grande parco paesaggistico -, non mancano il frutteto e l’orto, che è un piccolo giardino esso stesso; e non manca neppure l’angolo per far radicare le talee e germogliare i semi per i nuovi impianti: ventimila metri quadrati di un terreno a tratti quasi pianeggiante, a tratti scosceso, che vialetti e sentieri opportunamente pensati permettono di percorrere con facilità.
E dove il percorso si fa più ripido sono state realizzate scale e scalette che permettono di raggiungere e ammirare in ogni angolo questo giardino dalla grande ricchezza botanica.
Un viale di tigli percorre obliquamente la collina, fino al limite della proprietà oltre il quale si rincorrono i filari di una vigna, poi il percorso risale con sentieri che intenzionalmente prolungano il cammino schiudendo prospettive
sempre nuove, fino al grande prato su cui si affaccia l’orto-giardino, rigoglioso di ortaggi, aromatiche e fiori.
Davanti, l’occhio spazia nella vallata senza che un solo fabbricato spezzi l’incanto del luogo, mentre la curva sinuosa delle colline forma due quinte ai lati della veduta.

It is impossible to see the garden from outside the residence as it is located in its courtyard, therefore the visitors are usually surprised when they see it.
The garden dates back to 1877, when Countess Adele Roggeri Sannazzaro charged engineer Brocchi to design the plan for the extension of the “Country house” located in Ponzano.
The conceptual designs have been analyzed and the result of the analysis shows that the project of Mr. Brocchi included also the garden, laid out on a terrace supported by a retaining wall. The terrace overlooks a wonderful landscape, in fact the curved lines of the garden merge with the sinuous ones of the hills that surround it.
The original layout of the garden, which has never been modified, included the realization of curved flower beds bordered by low-growing boxwood hedges that enclosed the lawn. The colorful flowers are embedded in shrubs, while in the “central” ones groups of various species of trees alternate with isolated plants, and their arrangement aimed to emphasize their features.
The sinuous shapes of the flower beds were accentuated by the contrast between two shades of green (the one of the lawn and the other of the boxwood) plus the grey of the gravel of the paths.
Even the façade, consisting of a series of superimposed loggias, was emphasized by the arrangement, on the central axis of the plan, of an oval flower bed. It was like a big vase where some flowers, which embellished the view from the residence, were grown.
Even though nobody knows what kinds of plants, trees and shrubs were formerly cultivated in the garden, we can suppose that the majestic cedar of Lebanon is one of the most ancient trees in this park. It dominates the area and nowadays the residence preserves the name of this huge tree.
The current owners have recently restored the garden and the ancient vegetable garden, where greens are grown in flower beds, bordered by bricks.

The details that catch the eye are the sinuous game of the boxwood hedges on the turf around a basin and the most majestic and ancient tree, a cedar of Lebanon, that shades the lawn.
A romantic corner, located on a slope where shrubs, flowers, hackberries, a sequoia and some yews grow, is a nice look-out.
The garden, which can be reached from the residence by descending a short staircase, is laid out on a raised terrace. However, the difference in height between the terrace and the surrounding area is covered by flowers.
Around the garden there are large areas full of shrubs and flowers, especially perennial herbaceous plants which show botanical knowledge and a good taste in combining shapes and colors. Obviously, we can also find volunteer plants, such as orchids that grow in spring, or ornamental bulbous plants that, in autumn, cover the grassy slopes of the large landscape park.
There is even an orchard, a vegetable garden, which looks like a small garden, and a corner where new plants propagate through root cuttings and where the seeds sprout.
There are overall 20.000 square meters of level ground and slopes. Moreover, some paths and staircases have been designed so that it is easier to walk through the garden and the park and admire their botanical richness in every corner.
Visitors can follow a particular path bordered by lime trees leads to the bound of the property beyond which there is a vineyard. Then the second part of the path leads to a large lawn overlooked by the vegetable garden where a lot of vegetables, aromatic plants and flowers are grown.
Finally, the entire residence rises in front of a wonderful valley, characterized by the sinuous shape of the hills, where there are not any buildings.
